Clarity
Clarity is a reflection of how pure or impure a diamond appears. Impurities can range in size from being very minuscule to visibly large, when being inspected with a magnified loupe or with the unaided eye. Impurities can also come in the form of dark, white or clear inclusions, and are valued accordingly. Only the finest diamonds are considered to be loupe clean, flawless or internally flawless- having minor to no inclusions, even when examined by an experienced grader. Although diamond clarity is an important attribute, most inclusions are natural and microscopic, so it generally does not have a drastic effect on a diamond’s overall beauty.
Clarity Grades
FL: Flawless – No internal or external inclusions. Very rare diamonds.
IF: Internally Flawless – No internal inclusions. Very rare diamonds.
VVS1/VVS2: Very, Very Slightly Included – Minor inclusions that are rarely visible and difficult to see under 10x magnification. An excellent quality diamond.
VS1/VS2: Very Slightly Included - Inclusions that are typically not visible to the unaided eye. A high quality diamond.
SI1/SI2: Slightly included – Inclusions are visible under 10x magnification and may be visible with the unaided eye. A good diamond value.
I1/I2/I3: Included – Inclusions are significantly visible
