Celebrities are known for many things. Throwing extravagant parties, giving back to charities, owning one too many luxury vehicles, juicy scandals, etc. But every year, without fail, a handful of celebrities make headlines for getting engaged to, more often than not, another high-profile celebrity..and spending millions in the process.
We’ve been in the jewelry business for decades and have seen all sorts of lavish engagement rings and proposals. Nothing causes the jaw to drop more than a celebrity spending millions (yes, MILLIONS) on a breathtaking rare diamond engagement ring. We’ve dug up some of the most spectacular celebrity engagement rings in pop culture history. Grab some shades because you’re about to be blinded by some MAJOR bling, BLING.
Royals
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry
It’s no surprise that Meghan Markle is the talk of the tabloids from New York City to the United Kingdom. It’s a story ripped straight from a Hollywood movie script. A beautiful, successful actress from Los Angeles falls in love with a handsome and highly sought-after prince from across the pond..and the rest is history (literally.)
The two met through mutual friends (it’s okay, our friends don’t set us up on dates with royalty either) and announced their engagement two years later, in November 2017. Harry, Duke of Sussex, popped the big question with an even bigger diamond engagement ring, a whopping 6.5 carat 3-stone ring set on a yellow gold band. The couple told a news outlet soon after their engagement that the diamond was sourced from Botswana, where the couple first fell in love (how ROMANTIC). The ring, worth $200,000 will go down in history with the likes of other royalty engagement rings.
Kate Middleton and Prince William
Kate Middleton, another household royalty name, was gifted a 23-carat oval blue sapphire engagement ring surrounded by 14 solitaire diamonds by the Duke of Cambridge in November 2010.
Cue the tears because this specific ring has a deep and emotional meaning to not only Prince William but to the entire royal family. The ring was once owned by Princess Diana, the princess icon who tragically passed away in a car accident in August 1997. Prince William kept his mother’s beloved ring and eventually passed it on to his now wife, as a way to keep his mother’s memory and legacy alive. The 18K white gold ring was worth approximately $47,000 in the 80s when Princess Diana owned it and is now worth more than $500,00. Ah, diamonds age like fine wine.
Hip-Hop Artists
Beyonce and Jay-Z
There’s royalty..and then there’s hip-hop royalty. At the top of the throne is none other than Beyoncé and Jay-Z. Their union is one of the longest running couples in the music industry. The music mogul proposed to the R&B princess with a 24-carat emerald cut diamond engagement ring. It was custom made by experienced jeweler and diamond expert, Vashi Dominguez. Jay-Z reportedly bought the ring for $4.7 Million in 2008 and it is now worth more than $10 Million in 2019.
This is an insane amount of money to most people, even other A-list celebrities. For example, Mary-Kate Olson’s vintage Cartier engagement ring cost her then-fiance a cool $80,000. This may seem like pocket change to the $4.7 Million Jay-Z dropped over a decade ago. Just to put things into perspective even more..the average American spends $5,500 on an engagement ring.
Cardi B and Offset
Cardi B shot to fame in late 2017 after releasing her debut single “Kodak Yellow”. Within months, the rapper topped every chart in the music industry, sold out some of the biggest venues in the country and caught the eye of Migo’s rapper, Offset. The two kept a low profile until he popped the question to Cardi at a concert in Philadelphia, in front of a sold-out crowd. Although the couple was said to have officially tied the knot a few months prior to the public proposal, the 8-carat pear-shaped ring, set Offset back $500,000.
Despite cheating rumors, a public break-up and an even more public attempt to get Card B back, Offset and the rapper remain happily married and the proud parents to their one-year-old daughter, Kulture.
Athletes
Caroline Wozniaki and David Lee
Caroline Wozniaki is winning both on and off the court. The tennis superstar got engaged to former NBA athlete David Lee during a romantic trip to Bora Bora in 2017. The 8.88 carat large oval diamond set on a diamond pave band. The ring holds much significance to Caroline, who’s fathers’ favorite number is 8. The gorgeous ring was custom made by Hamra Diamonds in New York City.
The luxury diamond company even got to leak some exclusive details about the making of the ring. “It’s absolutely the nicest and perfectly made oval I have seen to date. It’s the perfect stone for this awesome, perfect couple” the jewelry company proudly boasted on Instagram.
Actors
Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas
Catherine Zeta Jones ranks very high on the list of pricey celebrity engagement rings. The actress met her longtime husband and Academy Award winning actor, Michael Douglas in 1996. The two were promoting separate movies at a film festival in France. Despite criticism from the public due to their 25-year age difference, the Hollywood couple got engaged on New Years Eve 1999 at his home in Aspen, Colorado.
As much as the engagement captured headlines, most of the talk was about the engagement ring. The lucky lady received a vintage Fred Leighton 10-carat diamond side-set marquise center stone surrounded by a halo of 28 smaller diamonds. The breathtaking engagement ring reportedly set Douglas back a cool $1 Million. The wedding, labeled “the wedding of the year” in 2000 and took place at the famous Plaza Hotel in New York City, cost the couple more than $1.5 Million.
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt
One of the biggest celebrity couples of our time, nicknamed Bradgelina, made headlines around the world when they got engaged in April 2012. The couple had already been dating for 7 years and had several children together. Brad popped the long awaited question with an emerald cut multi-stone ring designed over a year with Beverly Hills jeweler Robert Procop. The gorgeous ring is worth $500,000. Well done, Mr. Pitt, we expected nothing less.
Celebrities are notorious for spending lavishly and their engagement rings and weddings are simply no exception. Whether these marriages last a year or last decades, they will no doubt be remembered as some of the most expensive and costly unions in pop culture history. Just wait until you hear how much these brides spent on their wedding dresses..but we will save that one for another day.
