How to Notice a Pear Shaped Diamond

One of the most unique cut designs for a diamond is the pear shape. Often called the “teardrop cut,” this shape evokes soft, tender passion. Pear cut diamonds are the perfect ring style for the sensitive type.

They are distinctly ovular in shape, sometimes considered a teardrop diamond, narrowing out into a singular point protected by a prong or bezel in a pear-shaped diamond engagement ring. In terms of the actual cut, the pear shape is simply a modified version of the round-brilliant cut diamond. This classic cut’s timeless appeal has lasted because of its perfect proportions and superior brilliance (or shimmer). 58 facets or sides are mathematically arranged to reflect the most light, regardless of carat weight.

The pear shape is popular for a number of stones besides diamonds, including topaz and morganite.

Modified brilliant round diamond cuts are the category with the largest number of options for shape. Oval, trillion, marquise, and heart stone shapes are some cousins to the pear-shaped diamond. The most beautiful pear-shape diamonds are perfectly symmetrical, but their shapes can vary.

History of Pear-Shaped Diamonds

The earliest pear-shaped stone was designed in the late 1400s by Flemish polisher Ludwig van Berquem. The style wasn’t an automatic success, however.

In fact, pear-shaped diamonds became popularized in the 1960s by acting legend Elizabeth Taylor. Her gargantuan 69.42-carat pear-shaped diamond ring turned many heads. Since then, the pear shape remains one of the more popular designs of brilliant-cut diamonds, besides the round diamond. While this cut can shine in a solitaire setting, certain more involved settings can make the pear shape look even more beautiful than a solitaire engagement ring.

Here are 7 of our favorite pear-shaped diamond engagement ring styles:

1. Round Infinity

We adore the detail in this luscious feast for the eyes. Designer Barry Verragio always balances traditional designs with cutting-edge styles. In this two-tone pear shape engagement ring, a lovely pear-shaped diamond rests on a four-pronged crown.

Round-cut side stones add unparalleled shine. Three stone rings often signify a couple’s past, present, and future together. Paired with a stone cut with significance and the band’s infinity pattern, this ring is the perfect expression of sentimental love.

Italian filigree elevates the center stone about its wearer’s finger in a dazzling spectacle. This is an absolutely gorgeous engagement ring.

2. Pear Halo Split

This unique design has a lot going for it!

Halo settings are a fantastic way to dramatically increase the shimmering effect great engagement rings possess. A row of small gems encircles the center stone in a diamond halo engagement ring. This spectacular arrangement also features a pave setting, giving the illusion that the entire band is paved with diamonds.

To allow for a bit of the bride-to-be’s finger to be seen, the Pear Halo Split has a split shank band. Split shank settings separate into two bands and then come together again at the center-stone. The result is elegant and stylish, creating visual interest and a ring that looks larger.

3. Vintage Twisted

2020 has seen a continued shift toward vintage styles in jewelry. Many of the most exciting designers are bringing older looks to a new modern audience.

This Vintage Twisted pave pattern offers several classic looks in one dazzling ring. An intricate pave pattern on the band displays several fine details that can be made in either white or yellow gold. Friends and family will not be able to look away!

All Diamond Mansion set diamonds are GIA-certified, guaranteeing superb brilliance and fire. This ring is perfect for someone who enjoys the classics, yet still likes making a statement for today’s world.

4. Celtic Knot

1.42 Ct. Pear Cut Natural Diamond Celtic Knot Design Pave Natural Diamonds Engagement Ring (GIA Certified)

There are so many reasons to love Celtic influences. These centuries-old symbols and patterns bring cultural sophistication and really deep sweetness to a ring.

Historically, Celtic knots signified the strength in unity between two people as a protection against evil. The lines have no beginning and no end, a strong symbol for eternal lovers. The side profile shows off additional Celtic love symbols that knit into the center prongs.

A distinctly metallic band balances out the tracery, with extra gleam from a diamond pave around the middle of the band. Because the metal type is so visible in this design, you can choose exactly what you’d like, from 14k rose gold to 14k white gold and everything in between. We love the richness and meaning of this electrifying design.

5. East West 3 Stone Pear

Sometimes the best ways to feel glamorous are also the simplest. Want three times the sparkle? Try three times the diamond.

This understated band has three pear-shaped diamonds atop it. 1.5 carats of natural brilliant-cut splendor make for one glorious triptych. Upgrades to platinum or 18K white gold, yellow gold, or rose gold are always available from our jewelers. This ring is so stunning that it could even be used as an upgrade on your engagement ring later on or as an anniversary ring.

As with most Diamond Mansion stones, there is also the option to select exact color and clarity so you can double-check that you’re getting exactly what you want. Our Basic Guide will tell you everything you need to know about these metrics. Color ranges from the most colorless D to nearly yellow S-Z, and clarity is rated from FL (absolutely clean) to SI1 (clean).

6. Baguette and Round Sidestones

This striking baguette engagement ring can only lead to a “YES.” Three amazing layers of side stones lead to the large center piece in this pear cut engagement ring.

Baguettes are a great way to naturally lead the eye toward a unique pear-shaped diamond. Baguette diamonds became popular during the Art Deco movement in the 1920s. They get their name from their bread-like shape and are step-cut with facets resembling tiny staircases.

The addition of round-cut side stones and pave create a wonderful structure. Lots of linear detail are a perfect way to celebrate the pear shape, as this ring will shine from every angle, whether you wear it alone or stack it with your wedding band.

7. 5 Row Micro Pave

2.32 Ct. Pear Cut Natural Diamond 5 Row Micro Pave Diamond Engagement Ring (GIA Certified)

This piece has a serious presence regardless of ring size—5 rows of micro pave diamonds make up this whopping 2.34-carat ring.

Atop the kingdom of gemstones on a four-pronged throne sits the beloved pear center stone, with impressive visibility. It is a rare delight to have this much of the center diamond open for all to see, so add it to your wish list.
